Claddagh Rings and Symbols

Claddagh design depicts two hands clasping a heart and usually with a crown on top. The common interpretation of this symbol is often: the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

When the ring is given, the giving of the ring is saying: "With these hands I give you my heart and I crown it with my love."

The way that a Claddagh ring is worn, for example, is also meaningful... it's usually intended to show the wearer's romantic situation or availability.

Usually, a ring that's on the right hand with the heart facing outward away from the body shows the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship... their heart is open... And, maybe looking for a relationship...

When heart is facing toward the body this generally indicates a relationship...

A Claddagh ring on the left hand ring finger.. shows that the wearer is engaged if it's facing outward away from the body. But, if it is facing inward toward the body this usually means that the person is married.
