Earrings is one of the oldest forms of jewelry, dating back over 3,000 years. Some of the earliest known drawings of people wearing ear rings are found in Persia. Surprisingly they were not worn by women, but by men. In particular, these drawings depict various Persian soldiers wearing earrings.

Here are some of the more popular modern-day styles of earrings:

Stud and post earrings - These earrings have the appearance of floating on top of the earlobe because the "stud" that holds the earring in place goes through the earlobe and is hidden behind the earring itself.

The earring is held in place by a clutch or a removable friction back that slides onto the post from behind the earlobe.

Some stud earrings -- usually more expensive ones -- sometimes use a "screw back" that screws onto the post for a more secure hold.

Hoop earrings - extra sexy, these classic earrings are made of small metal tubing that is pushed together to form a circle. Usually there is a wire/post that goes into the earlobe and holds the earring in place.
